Reasons Why You Should Do the CrossFit Open

First of all, let’s talk about some important details to keep in mind.

What is it? Who is it for?

One workout per week for 5 consecutive weeks

February 21st -25th
February 28th- March 4th
March 7th- March11th
March 14th – March 18th
March 22nd- March 26th

“Anyone aged 14 or older can compete in the Open. All you have to do is sign up at and log your score each week. Workouts are released on Thursdays at 5 p.m. PT, and athletes have four days to complete the workout for the week and submit their score. Scores are due before 5 p.m. PT the following Monday. Complete the workouts at a CrossFit affiliate with a judge, or film your effort from anywhere in the world and submit a link as proof.”

1. Realize your biggest opportunity for improvement

One of the things most fun about CrossFit is it’s never ending journey for self-improvement. We will never find ourselves in a place of perfection. There will always be skills we can improve on, areas we can get stronger, or increase our cardiovascular threshold. The Open will magnify those needs of improvement and hopefully create new motivation to make your weakness a strength.

2. Expand your CrossFit community

We undoubtedly have an amazing group of people here at Seaward CrossFit. You already know that. There are also a ton of other great communities around the entire globe. The CrossFit Open gives you a chance to stretch the community to an international level. Rather than our small group of athletes who can relate to the amount of suffering during a workout you will be working out with half a million other people! Misery loves company, right?

3. You are more capable than you realize

Human beings are strange creatures who gravitate towards the path of least resistance. We seek comfort, balance, and familiar surroundings every chance we get. When you get outside that you will quickly see how much you can achieve by purposefully going against that urge.

You will still compete at Seaward but you will experience it in a whole new context. Having one of your peers judge each and every rep and knowing your score will be posted online creates a new dynamic you cannot replicate any other time of year. This new dimension, if you will, yields people pushing themselves harder than they ever imagined they would. I’ve witnessed and personally achieved PRs during those 5 weeks every single year. The excitement creates stories to be told for months, even years to come. I witnessed a girl who had never successfully completed a single muscle up string together 5 in a row. She was elated and still talks about it today. This can happen to you and I will bet my life on the fact someone at our gym will hit a PR or complete a movement they didn’t think possible again this year.

4. Release your competitive spirit

For some strange reason it becomes taboo to be competitive when we reach adulthood. It’s ok to be competitive in fact for some it may be unnatural not to compete in some manner or another.

For those of you who are thinking, “Zac, I’m not the competitive type”. I beg to differ. CrossFit is hard. Not everyone has what it takes between the ears to walk through the door, not to mention purposefully endure the discomfort of the conditioning we perform day in and day out.

5. Realize just how good the top competitors are

Just for the hell of it, it’s fun to compare to the top athletes in the world to truly respect what they are capable of. It’s one thing to watch impressive videos of people lifting heavy things on instagram but actually performing the same workout and comparing scores/ times is very different.

6. It is suitable for all fitness levels

CrossFit is intended to be all inclusive and this is no different. The movements and weights will be achievable regardless if you started last week or decade. Just like class we will scale using jumping pull ups, single unders, lighter loads, ect. You still get the chance to workout, enjoy the atmosphere, to be a part of a global community and, if you would like, measure your times against others of your level, age, and in some cases profession. Heck you might just be the fittest nurse in the state of Florida but you didn’t even know it.

7. It’s a really fun time!

Seriously, this is the best time of year to be a CrossFitter. You will see someone on the street wearing a CF shirt and be like, “hey how did you do last week? Workout 19.1 kicked my ass but I PR’d my double unders!”

If you do these workouts without actually signing up you are not getting the same experience. Plain and simple. You will not understand the adrenaline, the excitement, and frankly won’t get as good of a workout when you perform the workouts how you do every other day. This is a celebration of something we love to tell people we are apart of. Seriously, it’s $4/ week and you will be glad you did later.
